Vieira is a Type I beach located on the exposed mesotidal Atlantic Coast in the Lis River basin, south of the River Lis mouth. It is a consolidated urban beach subject to strong demand and benefits from various infrastructures, equipment and services. The region has a Mediterranean temperate climate.

7 June to 14 September 2025. Sampling frequency: 1 sample per week.

Water Quality

Water quality classification for 2024 follows Decreto-Lei 135/09 as amended by Decreto-Lei 113/2012. High microbiological indicator concentrations were recorded on 27 June 2024 and 24 July 2024, resulting in bathing prohibitions until results complied with quality standards. Seven days of bathing advisories or prohibitions were issued due to short-term pollution events during the 2024 bathing season.

Risks

Potential microbiological pollution sources include diffuse pollution from the River Lis; potential wastewater treatment plant failures upstream of the river mouth; solid waste from beach activities; oceanic waste; bird colonies; and high numbers of users. Phytoplankton proliferation is likely. Cyanobacteria and macroalgae proliferation are unlikely.
