VN Lipno - pláž Lipno nad Vltavou is a bathing beach located in the lower section of a large water reservoir in the Czech Republic. Lipno water reservoir (VN Lipno) with a surface area of 4,870 hectares and elevation of 725.6 meters above sea level. Water depth at the dam is 25 meters. Average discharge rate is 8.68 cubic meters per second with specific runoff of 10.9 liters per second per square kilometer.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as good (SZÚ classification per Regulation 238/2011 Coll.). Microbial contamination shows satisfactory status. Chlorophyll-a concentrations remain stable below 50 µg/l with annual averages of 13.9-25.9 µg/l, with isolated exceedances above 70 µg/l in August 2020 and 2022. Cyanobacteria cell counts regularly exceed 20,000 per milliliter, with the 100,000 threshold exceeded twice during 2020-2022. Cyanobacteria are an annual component of phytoplankton but do not form mass blooms. Phosphorus concentration has not been monitored at the main monitoring point since 2012. Point source pollution risk from phosphorus is extreme; diffuse source risk is high. The water body is highly sensitive to phosphorus pollution.

Risks

Cyanobacteria are regularly present, though their biomass typically does not exceed acceptable values. Risk of bacterial contamination and phosphorus input to the reservoir is increasing due to growing residential development projects on the left bank. Climate change increases the sensitivity of stagnant waters to nutrient inputs. Toxicologically risky cyanobacteria species are present regularly.
