Vristulven is a nutrient-poor forest lake with numerous islands, skerries, and bays located in the Klyftamon forest area. The bedrock consists largely of gneiss, with sedimentary rock from Lugnåsberg affecting the northern section. Three north-south moraine ridges run along the lake bottom. The lake is surrounded by coniferous and mixed forests, with larger bog areas in the north. Water vegetation includes reed canary grass, water lobelia, quillwort, water milfoil, and pondweed.
