Wassersportsee Zülpich is an artificial lake in Zülpich, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The bathing beach covers 203 metres of shoreline. The lake has been designated as a bathing water since 1984 and has maintained an excellent quality rating for four consecutive years (2020–2023). The water body is characterized by sandy and clay substrate with an altered shoreline structure.

Water

Artificial lake covering 85 hectares. Mean depth 17.2 metres, maximum depth 37.2 metres. Water temperature ranges from 13–23 °C (mean 18 °C). pH 8.3–8.5 (mean 8.4). Water transparency 1–1.5 metres (mean 1.25 metres). Water exchange time exceeds 30 days. The lake is mesotrophic with groundwater flow as primary water renewal mechanism. Substrate is sandy to clay composition with stratified water body.

Water Quality

Rated excellent in 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023. Water quality assessment completed in 2024. No discharges from municipal treatment plants, industrial facilities, or household systems. Minimal influence from untreated rainwater limited to the immediate shoreline and beach area.

Risks

Waterfowl (grey geese) present with frequent occurrence; no relevant impact on water quality since the 1990s. No cyanobacteria blooms observed in the past four years; future risk of cyanobacteria mass development assessed as low. Low risk of macroalgae and Fadenalgen growth. No evidence of cercariae (duck fleas) or sediment contamination.
