Zona Molo is a predominantly sandy beach in Laigueglia, Liguria, bounded to the west by a pedestrian pier and to the east by a short groin, with an additional groin in the central zone running perpendicular to the shoreline. The beach is surrounded by private bathing establishments with services, accommodation facilities, and restaurants. Behind the beach are a seaside promenade, the town centre, and the railway station.

Water

Coastal water body (Laigueglia-Albenga water body). Bathing area extends 0.623 km. The beach is classified as coastal waters with mountainous features and low stability.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent (based on 2019-2022 four-year assessment). The Ligurian Sea is not characterised by cyanobacterial blooms due to predominantly oligotrophic conditions. Microalgal proliferation of Ostreopsis ovata has occurred in Liguria over the past decade. The reference station at Pietra Ligure (Savona) recorded no exceedances of the 30,000 cells/litre limit between 2019-2023, but values between 10,000–30,000 cells/l were recorded in July 2021, August 2022, and July 2023.

Risks

During upstream flooding and following heavy precipitation, increased torrent flow rates may transport wastewater downstream. The Fosso Fasce Grasse outlet discharges directly into the bathing water. A wastewater discharge pipe from the San Sebastiano coastal treatment plant discharges approximately 440 metres from the beach. Ostreopsis ovata produces effects in sensitive individuals through aerosol inhalation, causing temporary and reversible upper respiratory symptoms and possible fever.
