The bathing water at 140 m South Fosso San Lorenzo is located in Francavilla al Mare, Abruzzo, Italy. Coastal marine waters. The water body is associated with Fosso San Lorenzo stream system. A submarine outfall pipe extends approximately 2,000 meters from shore.

Location

Francavilla al Mare, Chieti Province, Abruzzo Region, Italy. Tourist Information Office: Piazza Sirena, CAP 66023, Telephone: 085-817169. The bathing area extends 0.257 km along the coast.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: SUFFICIENT. Two functional treatment plants serve the area: FRANCAVILLA-FORO (150 kW capacity, serving up to 38,000 inhabitants with 96% connection rate) and FRANCAVILLA-PRETARO (135 kW capacity, serving up to 38,000 inhabitants with 96% connection rate). Both discharge via submarine pipes at 2,000 meters from the coast. A third treatment plant is under construction on the Alento River. Overflow from treatment plants is released into Fosso San Lorenzo.

Risks

River mouths (Foci fluviali) identified as pollution sources. The Foro River and Alento River are noted as additional pollution sources. Short-term pollution events are under study with appropriate modelling approaches. No cyanobacterial blooms have been detected in waters off the Abruzzo coast. Sparse phytoplankton blooms occur in summer; some dinoflagellate blooms with low or no toxic species have been recorded in previous years. No anomalous events have occurred. Animals are prohibited from accessing the beach per regional ordinance.
