A sandy public beach located 350 metres north of the Foro River mouth in Ortona, Abruzzo. The beach is 30 metres wide and situated in an area of modest urban development. Coastal water body (Acque Costiere - Pianura Litoranea - Media Stabilità - C2 category). Surface area of 0.456 square kilometres. Part of the Foro River basin (CI_FORO_3).

Location

Ortona, Chieti Province, Abruzzo Region. The bathing water is designated 350 metres north of the Foro River mouth. The nearest town is Ortona.

Facilities

Bathing establishments, disabled access facilities, food and beverage services. Animals are not permitted.

Water Quality

Water quality classification is GOOD. The water body is monitored under the bathing water profile. River mouth discharges have been identified as a potential pollution source. Wastewater treatment is provided by the Francavilla and Peticcio treatment plants.

Risks

River mouth discharges identified as a cause of water impact. Short-duration pollution events from river mouths are under study using a suitable modelling approach. No cyanobacterial blooms have been recorded in the marine waters off the Abruzzo coast. Sparse phytoplankton blooms have occurred in summer in previous years, with occasional dinoflagellate blooms of low toxicity or non-toxic species. No anomalous events have occurred.
