Fjellerup Strand is a approximately 5 kilometre long and 20 metre wide beach located in the northern end of Norddjurs Municipality. The beach extends from Skovgårde Strand in the west to a summer house area in the east. The seabed consists of sand, with the distance from the water's edge to 2 metres depth being approximately 200–250 metres. Water temperature varies between 12°C and 20°C during the bathing season.

Water

The bathing water is seawater (salt water) located in Kattegat. The beach is approximately 5 kilometres long and 20 metres wide. The distance from the water's edge to 2 metres depth is approximately 200–250 metres. The prevailing surface water current flows from east to west, though wind-induced water movement can vary the current direction significantly.

Location

Fjellerup Strand is located in the northern end of Norddjurs Municipality, at GPS coordinates Klitvej, 8585 Glesborg. Access is available along Klitvej and Vestre Klitvej via small paths. Four major car parks are located near the beach, with additional parking available along Klitvej and Vestre Klitvej.

Facilities

Large car parks at Klitvej (near ice house), Bøsholmstien, Hemming Nielsens Vej, Møllebækvej, and Tværvej. Disabled access car park on Vestre Klitvej. Tables and benches at the beach. Rescue posts along the beach. Toilets at three of the car parks. Ice house and fish shop at Klitvej. Disabled-friendly bathing bridge installed seasonally at the beach near the fish shop. Fjellerup Strands Camping located approximately 100 metres from the beach.

Season

Monitoring and bathing season extends during the period when water temperatures range between 12°C and 20°C. Dogs must be kept on lead from 1 April to 30 September.

Water Quality

The bathing water comprises nine monitoring stations. Water quality classifications based on E. coli and enterococci analyses from the preceding 4-year period show excellent quality at eight stations (DKBW 831, 832, 846, 847, 848, 899, 904, 905) and good quality at one station (DKBW 824 at Tværvej). An exception exists at the Møllebækken outfall area, where water quality is poor due to risk of faecal pollution from wastewater system overflows.

Risks

Faecal pollution from wastewater system overflows and treatment plant malfunctions, particularly at the Møllebækken outfall. Risk of algal blooms including blue-green algae (Nodosaria spumigena in late summer), though risk is low due to high salinity. Nutrient-driven macroalgae growth and accumulation of washed-up seaweed (kelp and eelgrass) in shallow areas. Pollen accumulation in spring and early summer. Chemical pollution from maritime accidents is possible but unlikely. Oil spills from ships pose a low risk.
