Fjellerup Strand is a beach approximately 5 km long and 20 metres wide located in the northern part of Norddjurs Municipality in Denmark. The beach extends from Skovgårde Strand in the west to a summer house area in the east. The distance from the shoreline to 2 metres depth is approximately 200–250 metres. The beach is part of a larger bathing water area comprising nine sampling stations.

Water

Saltwater in the Kattegat sea. Water temperature varies between 12°C and 20°C during the bathing season. Surface water current flows predominantly from east to west, though it can vary significantly with wind direction and storm surge.

Location

Located in Norddjurs Municipality, northern end. GPS reference point: Fjellerup Strand, Klitvej, 8585 Glesborg. Access is available along Klitvej and Vestre Klitvej via small paths. Four larger parking areas are located near the beach, with additional parking along Klitvej and Vestre Klitvej.

Facilities

Larger parking areas at Klitvej (near ice house), Bøsholmstien, Hemming Nielsens Vej, Møllebækkvej, and Tværvej. Disabled parking on Vestre Klitvej. Tables and benches at the beach. Rescue stations along the beach. Toilets at three of the parking areas. Ice house and fish shop at Klitvej. Disabled-friendly bathing pier installed seasonally at the beach near the fish shop. Fjellerup Strands Camping located approximately 100 metres from the beach.

Season

Dogs must be kept on leash from 1 April to 30 September.

Water Quality

Water quality classification is mostly excellent (udmærket) and good (god). Most of the nine sampling stations have excellent water quality: DKBW 831, 832, 846, 847, 848, 899, 904, and 905. One station (DKBW 824) has good water quality. Bacterial concentrations are generally low but variable. Two pollution events in 2011 recorded high E.coli concentrations at all sampling stations.

Risks

Low risk of fecal contamination from summer house sewage systems. Elevated risk of overflow from the combined sewer system in Fjellerup town and from Fjellerup Strands treatment plant into Fjellerup Møllebæk. Risk of E.coli contamination from watercourse outlets; a pollution event was detected at Tangbækken outlet in June 2007. Very low risk of cyanobacteria blooms due to high salinity. Low risk of eutrophic microalgae blooms. Relatively high risk of seaweed wash-up in shallow coastal areas. Low risk of oxygen depletion due to shallow water depth and current conditions. Low risk of chemical pollution from shipping accidents. Pollen accumulation occurs seasonally and can locally impair water quality.
