Bønnerup Strand Øst is a sandy beach approximately 1.8 kilometres long and 100–140 metres wide located in the northern part of Norddjurs Municipality in Denmark. The beach consists of sand with few stones and is accessed via bathing piers through a shallow-water area. The seabed is sandy with some gravel and stones, with depths of 2 metres occurring 150–300 metres from the shore. The beach extends from the harbor in the west to the campground in the east.

Water

Saltwater beach on the Kattegat coast. Approximately 1.8 kilometres long and 100–140 metres wide. Sandy seabed with gravel and stones. Distance to 2-metre depth: 150–300 metres from shore. Water temperature ranges from 11°C to 21°C during the bathing season.

Location

Bønnerup Strand Øst is located in the northern part of Norddjurs Municipality. GPS coordinates: Bønnerup Strand Øst, Havet, 8585 Glesborg. The town of Bønnerup lies inland from the beach, with a summer house area and campground to the east. A parking area is available.

Facilities

Parking area, boat launching ramp/path, tables and benches, lifeguard rescue posts positioned at the water, access via bathing piers. The path along the beach is part of the North Sea Route (Nordsøruten). Dogs must be kept on a leash from 1 April to 30 September.

Season

Bathing season is during the period when water temperatures range from 11°C to 21°C. Dogs are restricted from the beach from 1 April to 30 September.

Water Quality

Water quality classified as Excellent (Udmærket), the highest possible classification, based on monitoring results from the preceding 4-year period using e.coli and enterococcus analysis. Bacterial concentrations were low and relatively stable during 2009–2012.

Risks

Fecal pollution from scattered dwellings, campground septic systems, and boat toilet tank emptying (low risk). Algae blooms, particularly blue-green algae and planktonic algae in spring and late summer (low to very low risk). Pollen accumulation in spring/early summer causing yellow discoloration. Seaweed/eelgrass decomposition causing water discoloration. Oil spills and chemical contamination from harbor activities (low risk). Oxygen depletion is very rare.
