Gjerrild Strand is a fine sand beach approximately 1.5 kilometres long and 35 metres wide in the northern part of Norddjurs Municipality. The beach extends from a summer house area in the west to the outlet of Brøndstrup Mølleå stream in the east. The sandy seabed has few stones, with a deeper, rockier area near the stream outlet where seals can occasionally be seen. The beach experiences few shells and limited seaweed accumulation.

Water

Saltwater beach in Kattegat. Approximately 1.5 kilometres long and 35 metres wide. Distance from beach edge to 2-metre depth varies from 60 to 230 metres. Water temperature ranges between 10°C and 20°C during bathing season. Surface water currents predominantly flow from east to west, though wind and storm surge can cause significant variation.

Location

Located in the northern part of Norddjurs Municipality. GPS orientation point: Gjerrild Strand, Langholmvej, 8500 Grenå. Multiple parking areas available, with a larger parking area at Stavnsborgvej from which a path leads to the beach.

Facilities

Larger parking area at Stavnsborgvej; tables and benches at the beach; rescue posts along the beach; toilet and waste sorting at the parking area; Gjerrild Nordstrands Camping approximately 500 metres from the beach; boat spaces; access to Nordsøruten route; bird observation point for migratory birds.

Water Quality

Water quality classified as Excellent, the highest possible classification, based on regular control samples from the preceding 4-year period analysing E. coli and enterococci. Bacterial concentrations are generally low with occasional larger fluctuations.

Risks

Low risk of short-term faecal pollution from summer house area; slightly higher risk from scattered dwellings and agricultural properties. Relatively high risk of local seaweed washup due to nutrient loading in Hevring Bay and good growth conditions in shallow coastal areas. Low risk of blue-green algae blooms due to high salinity. Low risk of oxygen depletion. Low risk of chemical pollution. Pollen accumulations are a recurring phenomenon that can locally cause poor water quality discolouration. Dogs must be kept on leads from 1 April to 30 September.
