The bathing water is located 500 metres south of the treatment plant in Bisceglie, in the Puglia region of Italy. It is a rocky coastal area within the Bisceglie-Molfetta water body. The beach has been classified as excellent for water quality between 2017 and 2020.

Location

Bisceglie, province of Barletta-Andria-Trani, Puglia region, Italy. The water body extends 0.442 square kilometres.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent (2017–2020). The area is characterised by commercial and industrial settlements in the vicinity of Bisceglie's urban centre. A wastewater treatment plant discharges treated effluent from civil and productive settlements directly into the sea. The area has experienced blooms of the dinoflagellate microalga Ostreopsis ovata during July–September. Marine organism deaths and illnesses (starfish, sea urchins, crabs, cephalopod molluscs) have been documented in correspondence with high concentrations of Ostreopsis ovata in the water and on the seabed.

Risks

During intense rainfall, the wastewater treatment system may overflow, discharging excess water into the sea. Ostreopsis ovata blooms occur seasonally (July–September) and can cause transient illness in swimmers including rhinitis, pharyngitis, laryngitis, bronchitis, fever, dermatitis, and conjunctivitis. Rough seas promote the formation of marine aerosol, which can disperse the microalga's toxin into the air.
