Achensee, Süd is the southern bathing area of Lake Achensee, the largest lake in North Tyrol with a surface area of 6.8 km² and maximum depth of 133 metres. The lake has been used as a reservoir for electricity generation since 1927. Wastewater treatment improvements in the catchment area beginning in 1990 significantly reduced nutrient levels in the water. The bathing area is monitored for microbiological quality according to Austrian bathing water regulations.
