Afife is a rural beach with an extensive sand strip bordered by a consolidated dune system. Some areas are subject to erosion processes. A rockfill structure exists on the southern side, constructed following storm interventions in 1978–1979.

Municipality of Viana do Castelo. Monitoring point coordinates: 41.78083°N, 8.87139°W.

Season

June 14 to September 14, 2025.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified according to Decreto-Lei 135/2009 (as amended by Decreto-Lei 113/2012). Sampling frequency is every 3 weeks. No days of bathing prohibition or advisory warnings due to short-term pollution were recorded during the 2024 bathing season.

Risks

Short-term pollution is unlikely but may occur due to excessive flow from tributary streams during rainfall, leading to microbial load entrainment, or from untreated effluent discharge following malfunction of wastewater pumping stations. Faecal contamination may originate from Cabanas creek, which flows south of the beach, or from failures in sewage system infrastructure. Cyanobacteria blooms have a moderate historical occurrence. Macroalgae and phytoplankton blooms are unlikely.
