Forte do Cão is a rural beach with an extensive sand strip bordered by a line of dunes. The surrounding area is dominated by natural elements, both biotic and abiotic. The beach is also known as Gelfa beach.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified according to Decreto-Lei 135/2009 (amended by Decreto-Lei 113/2012). Monitoring is conducted every 3 weeks. No days of bathing prohibition or advisory due to short-term pollution events were recorded during the 2024 bathing season.

Risks

Faecal contamination may originate mainly from the sewerage network. Short-term pollution lasting less than 72 hours is unlikely but may occur due to malfunction in the wastewater pumping station. Cyanobacteria have a moderate proliferation potential with historical occurrence of blooms. Macroalgae and phytoplankton have low proliferation potential with no historical occurrence.
