Ínsua is a rural beach located in the municipality of Viana do Castelo, Portugal. The beach features a sand area and a dune system that shows signs of intense erosion. It is situated along the Lima River basin and is monitored for bathing water quality during the official bathing season.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored every three weeks during the bathing season. No days of bathing prohibition or advisory warnings due to short-term pollution occurred during the 2024 bathing season. Faecal contamination may originate from local sewerage networks, rainwater drainage systems, the Ínsua tributary, and the Ribeira de Mós which empties nearby.

Risks

Short-term pollution is unlikely but may occur due to excessive flow of the tributary during heavy rainfall events, potentially carrying microbiological load. Malfunctions in the wastewater pumping station could also cause pollution events. Moderate potential for cyanobacteria blooms exists based on historical occurrence. Low potential for macroalgae and phytoplankton blooms.
