Apúlia is an urban beach with sand and some rocky outcrops located in Esposende. The beach ends at a jetty to the south and encompasses the Apúlia Norte and Apúlia concessions. It is monitored for bathing water quality under Portuguese regulations.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified according to Portuguese Decreto-Lei 135/2009 (amended by Decreto-Lei 113/2012). Sampling frequency is every 3 weeks. No days of bathing prohibition or advisory due to short-term pollution occurred during the 2024 bathing season.

Risks

Short-term pollution is unlikely but may occur due to excessive tributary flow during rainfall events, leading to microbiological contamination, or from sewage treatment plant malfunctions. Faecal contamination may originate from the ribeira da Lagoa and ribeiro da Fonte da Senhora waterlines near the beach or from the sewerage network. Cyanobacteria have a moderate potential for proliferation with a history of bloom occurrences. Macroalgae and phytoplankton have low proliferation potential with no history of occurrence.
