Fão - Ofir is an urban beach with an extensive sand strip that is narrow and flat, which limits the bathing area, particularly during high tide. The beach is commonly known as Ofir.

Water Quality

Water quality classification is compliant with Decreto-Lei 135/2009 of June 3rd, amended by Decreto-Lei 113/2012 of May 23rd. Bathing was advised against or prohibited for zero days in the 2024 bathing season due to short-term pollution events. Monitoring frequency is every 3 weeks.

Risks

Short-term pollution events are unlikely but may occur due to excessive flow from tributaries and the rainwater drainage network during rainfall, which can carry microbiological load. Faecal contamination may originate mainly from the Cávado river or the rainwater drainage network. Cyanobacteria proliferation has a moderate potential with a history of bloom occurrences. Macroalgae and phytoplankton proliferation are unlikely with no historical occurrences.
