Arena is a sandy-pebbly beach with rocky coastline and artificial structures parallel to the shore, located in Framura, Liguria. It is an unequipped free beach accessed on foot via a scenic walking path from the railway station. The surrounding area is sparsely inhabited with vegetation of angiosperms and conifers. The bathing water has been classified as GOOD for the four-year period 2021–2024.

Coastal waters of the Moneglia-Levanto water body. The Rio Valle di Caneva river mouth flows directly onto the bathing area.

Location

Framura, La Spezia province, Liguria region. Accessed on foot via a scenic walking path from Framura railway station. The beach extends 1.233 km.

Facilities

Unequipped free beach with no lifeguards, toilets, showers, or disabled access facilities mentioned. Animals are permitted.

Water Quality

Water quality classification for 2021–2024: GOOD. No treatment plants or sewerage pipes are present within the bathing water. A wastewater treatment facility is located approximately 338 metres upstream from the monitoring station. A sewerage pipe located east of the sampling station discharges approximately 550 metres from the beach.

Risks

During heavy rainfall, increased stream flow can transport sewage downstream. The Rio Valle di Caneva river mouth discharges directly onto the bathing water. Ostreopsis ovata microalgae have been observed in Liguria over the past decade; the bathing area is within monitoring zone Area 11 'Punta Mesco'. Reference monitoring at Sestri Levante station from 2020–2024 showed no exceedances or values in the 10,000–30,000 cells/litre range. Ostreopsis ovata exposure via aerosol inhalation can cause temporary and reversible respiratory irritation and fever in sensitive individuals.
