The Attersee at Weißenbach is Austria's largest inland lake with a surface area exceeding 46 km² and depths reaching nearly 170 m. The lake exhibits extremely low nutrient loading and exceptional water clarity with visibility depths up to 20 m, making it the clearest lake in Upper Austria. The water displays a characteristic turquoise colour resulting from biological limestone precipitation in the open water caused by plankton algae metabolism.
