Azuolu Salos

Lithuania Lake 1 - Excellent

Ąžuolų salos is a bathing area located on Lake Platelė in the Žemaitija National Park. The beach features a natural shoreline with sand and fine gravel. Water vegetation including reeds, sedges, and arrowheads is present in some areas at the water's edge. The bathing area can accommodate approximately 150 visitors during peak season under favorable weather conditions.

Water

Lake Platelė. Type 3 lake. Average water depth 1.2 metres, maximum depth 1.5 metres. Beach length 150 metres. Natural shoreline. Water body identification code 70400303. Located in the Minija sub-basin of the Nemunas river basin.

Location

Located in Platelė parish, Plungės district, Telšiai County, Lithuania. The bathing area is situated on Lake Platelė within the Žemaitija National Park territory.

Facilities

Toilets available. Camping area equipped with two shelters, tables, and benches. Fire sites provided. Waste management facilities including rubbish bins and separate containers for recyclables (paper, glass, plastic). Dogs are prohibited from being let loose, bathing, or entering areas of human concentration.

Water Quality

Water quality has met excellent quality requirements from 2018 to 2024. Ecological status is good and meets good ecological status and good ecological potential requirements under Directive 2000/60/EC. No point source pollution discharges are present. No diffuse pollution sources are identified. No other surface water bodies in the upstream influence zone act as pollution sources.

Risks

Short-term pollution possible during rainfall events. Pollution typically disappears within 1–2 days after rain ceases. Visual monitoring for cyanobacteria is conducted. Phosphorus and nitrogen levels were not tested. Cyanobacteria, macroalgae, and marine phytoplankton spreading tendency assessment was not conducted.
