Baia Garavano is a bathing water area in Ventimiglia, Liguria, characterised by granular beaches alternating with steep rocky cliffs. The beach includes both private beach facilities with services and free public beaches. The area is backed by the SS1 state road, a railway line, the Balzi Rossi coastal path, and agricultural areas with greenhouses. The bathing water has been classified as excellent for the 2020–2023 four-year evaluation period.

Coastal water body. Area: 2.429 km². Located in the water body known as Capo Mortola.

Location

Ventimiglia, province of Imperia, Liguria region, Italy. The bathing area extends between the Latte area and the state border. Nearby reference: Mentone tourist harbour located approximately 680 metres to the west, outside the bathing water area.

Private beach establishments with services. Free public beaches available.

Water Quality

Classification: Excellent (2020–2023 four-year period). The Ligurian Sea is not characterised by cyanobacterial blooms due to predominant oligotrophic conditions. Monitoring station Tino at Mortola recorded no exceedances of the 30,000 cells/litre limit and no values between 10,000–30,000 cells/litre from 2019 to 2023. No wastewater treatment plants or discharge pipes are present within the bathing water area.

Risks

Potential pollution from the Mentone tourist harbour located 680 metres to the west. Rio San Luigi river mouth at the western boundary of the bathing water may transport effluent during heavy rainfall and upstream issues. Ostreopsis ovata microalgal proliferation has occurred in Liguria over the past decade; inhalation of aerosol can cause temporary and reversible respiratory tract effects and fever in sensitive individuals.
