Water

Coastal water body in the Ligurian Sea at Capo Mortola. The area covers 1.838 km and is characterized by steep cliffs with inlets and exposed rocks that present navigation hazards.

Location

Ventimiglia, Liguria province, in the municipality of Ventimiglia. The area is situated along the Capo Mortola water body, with the SS1 road and Hanbury Botanical Gardens located inland.

Facilities

Private bathing establishments with services and free beaches. Hanbury Botanical Gardens are accessible in the adjacent area.

Water Quality

Classification: Excellent (2020-2023 four-year evaluation). A sewage pipe located east of the monitoring station discharges approximately 400 metres from the shore, outside the bathing water. Ostreopsis ovata microalgae blooms have been observed along the Liguria coast in recent years, but the reference station at Tino in Mortola recorded no exceedances of the 30,000 cells/litre limit or values between 10,000–30,000 cells/litre from 2019 to 2023.

Risks

Steep cliffs with inlets and exposed rocks present navigation hazards. During heavy precipitation, increased stream flow from the Rio Vallone della Sorba (which discharges directly into the bathing water) may transport waste downstream. Ostreopsis ovata microalgae can cause temporary and reversible respiratory tract issues and fever in sensitive individuals through aerosol inhalation.
