Water Quality

Bacteriological water quality has been monitored, with analysis of Escherichia coli and enterococci concentrations. Water quality classifications follow EU Directive standards (1976 and 2006 directives). Potential for macro-algae and phytoplankton proliferation has been assessed. Multiple pollution sources have been identified including wastewater network overflows, stormwater discharge, and treatment plant effluent.

Risks

Identified pollution sources include wastewater network overflows from pumping stations, stormwater runoff during rainy periods, treated wastewater discharge from treatment plants, and potential diffuse and accidental pollution. Macro-algae proliferation potential has been documented with seaweed collection recorded on Sarzeau beaches in 2009 and 2010.
