Bellocchio is a sandy beach bathing water area in the Ravenna province of Emilia-Romagna, stretching from the Ferrara/Ravenna provincial border to the north of the Reno River mouth. The coastline features beaches, dunes, and sandy areas, with saltwater wetlands, freshwater wetlands, pine forests, and Mediterranean vegetation inland. The beach is approximately 70–80 metres wide and experiences significant erosion. Bathing use is practically non-existent.

Water

Coastal marine water in a stable alluvial plain. The bathing area extends 1.959 km and encompasses the Bellocchio Canal, which regulates water flow from the Comacchio valleys to and from the sea. The beach width is 70–80 metres.

Location

Ravenna, Emilia-Romagna region, extending from the Ferrara/Ravenna provincial boundary to the Reno River mouth area. No facilities or parking are available at this location.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent (reference years 2015–2018). Escherichia coli: 90th percentile 12 CFU/100 ml, 95th percentile 13 CFU/100 ml. Intestinal enterococci: 90th percentile 23 CFU/100 ml, 95th percentile 28 CFU/100 ml. No pollution sources from direct discharge points are present.

Risks

The beach experiences strong erosion. The Bellocchio Canal and the Reno River mouth nearby may cause eutrophication. Macroalgae proliferation of the genus Ulva was recorded in the central-northern coastal section during July–August 2018, modifying the use conditions of the bathing zone during biomass accumulation. No cyanobacterial eutrophic events have been reported.
