Location

Berck, commune located on the northern coast of France. The bathing zone Centre plage is positioned at the Authie estuary outlet in the Baie d'Authie.

Water Quality

Bacteriological monitoring conducted from 2003 to 2010 measured Escherichia coli and Enterococci concentrations. Water quality is influenced by precipitation, wind direction, wastewater treatment discharge, river inputs, and agricultural activities. The 95th percentile concentrations of E. coli and Enterococci were tracked over the monitoring period.

Risks

Identified pollution sources include the Berck wastewater treatment plant (Unité technique d'assainissement), particularly overflow discharges during heavy rainfall; inputs from the Authie river and tributaries including the Fliers stream at Waben; and agricultural activities in the watershed. Phytoplankton blooms and shellfish quality are monitored as additional health risks.
