Merlimont is a bathing beach located on the northern coast of France in the Pas-de-Calais department. The Centre plage de Merlimont is a monitored bathing zone subject to regular bacteriological quality assessments. The beach is exposed to tidal and wave conditions typical of the English Channel coast. Water quality is influenced by precipitation, wind patterns, tidal coefficients, and several identified pollution sources including wastewater treatment facilities and agricultural runoff.

Water Quality

Bacteriological water quality monitored from 2014 to 2020. Escherichia coli and enterococci concentrations measured daily during bathing season. Classification based on daily concentration analysis. Water quality influenced by precipitation, wind direction, tidal state, and tidal coefficients. Identified pollution sources include the Cucq/Merlimont technical unit, stream inputs, agricultural activities, and camping areas.

Risks

Potential contamination from wastewater treatment facility discharge, agricultural runoff via streams, and camping area inputs. Phytoplankton monitoring conducted. Shellfish microbial quality monitored. Nutrient monitoring network in place. Macro-waste monitoring conducted.
