L'Escalet is a bathing beach in Ramatuelle, France, characterized by sand and rocks with posidonia seagrass beds indicating good environmental quality. The beach has an abrupt bathymetric profile exposing it to swell, resulting in regular and significant water circulation. The beach is frequently visited by pleasure boats in the Bonporté bay and experiences influences from urban stormwater runoff via the Escalet stream and boat traffic.

Water

Mediterranean Sea beach with sand and rocky facies. Average summer water temperature is 22°C (maximum 26°C). Presence of posidonia seagrass beds between 200 m to the east. Abrupt bathymetric profile indicating exposure to swell with regular and significant water circulation.

Location

Ramatuelle, France. The beach is located in the Bonporté bay area with an abrupt bathymetric profile.

Water Quality

Classification A (good quality) for 2007, 2008, and 2009; classification B (average quality) in 2006. Type 1 bathing water profile indicating no proven risk of water pollution. Water quality is sufficient, good, or excellent under Directive 2006/7/CE based on the four most recent bathing seasons. Mixed pollution (organic and mineral) identified including high concentrations of suspended matter, copper, DBO5, nitrogen, and phosphorus; traces of diesel and surfactants.

Risks

Potential phytoplankton proliferation under certain climatic conditions. Risk of fecal matter pollution from stormwater overflow due to network infiltration and illegal connections. Risk of pollution from the Escalet lifting station located 35 m from the sea. Potential pollution risk from breaches in the Bonne Terrasse outfall pipe, increased during North to North-East wind conditions. High suspended matter sensitivity from soil erosion. Presence of photophilic rock algae as potential source of planktonic proliferation.
