Castrocucco is a bathing area in the Gulf of Policastro, Basilicata, characterized by a sandy beach on one part and unspoiled rocky coastline on the other. The seabed is rocky and the water is exceptionally clear to depths of 18–20 metres, making it popular with swimmers and diving enthusiasts. The area has tourism-related structures but no urban settlements. The Pamafi Canal discharges into this zone.

Location

Maratea, Potenza Province, Basilicata Region. Located at coordinates 39.933199 −15.750362, at the mouth of the Pamafi Canal in the Gulf of Policastro. The bathing area extends between coordinates 39.934360 −15.743491 and 39.931818 −15.751655.

Season

Official bathing season runs from 1 May to 30 September. Monitoring period: 1 April to 30 September.

Water Quality

Classification period: 2017–2020. Monitoring occurs from 1 April to 30 September with monthly sampling frequency. No bathing bans were in effect during the 2020 bathing season.

Risks

The Pamafi Canal mouth is designated as a non-bathing zone, with a buffer width of 20 metres centred on the canal outlet.
