Water Quality

Water quality classification: E (poor). Wastewater treatment is managed through a mixed sewerage network connected to treatment plants consisting of Imhoff septic tanks. Identified pollution sources include domestic wastewater and runoff from cultivated agricultural surfaces.

Risks

Cyanobacterial proliferation, particularly of species P. rubescens, occurs cyclically. The water was interdicted from bathing during the entire 2007 bathing season and in June 2008 due to cyanobacterial density exceeding 5,000 cells/ml. No toxic effects clearly linked to cyanobacterial proliferation have been reported on swimmers or aquatic ecosystems.
