Riva Verde is a bathing establishment located on Lake Borgiano in the Marches region. The bathing area covers approximately 0.48 hectares at an altitude of 300 metres. The surrounding landscape consists of semi-natural and agricultural environments with wooded areas. The lake has been characterized for years by the presence of the cyanobacterium P. rubescens, though density levels in the bathing area are generally low during summer months.

Lake Borgiano. The water body is situated in a catchment area of the Chienti River. The bathing area extends 0.47656 hectares and is located at an altitude of 300 metres.

Location

Caldarola, Macerata province, Marches region. The competent authorities are the Municipality of Caldarola (Via Vittorio Emanuele II, 13; telephone 0733 905529) and the Municipality of Serrapetrona (Via G. Leopardi 18; telephone 0733 908321). A single facility with a bar, restaurant, sanitary services, and parking areas for campers and tents is present at the site.

Water Quality

Water quality classification is E. The cyanobacterium P. rubescens is present, reaching densities of up to 8,000,000 cells/litre during spring and autumn-winter periods, but generally showing low density in the bathing area during summer months. During the bathing season over the past four years, toxin concentrations have remained below 1,000,000 cells/litre and toxins have consistently been non-detectable. No toxic effects clearly connected to cyanobacterial proliferation have been reported on swimmers or the aquatic environment.

Risks

The cyanobacterium P. rubescens is present in the lake, producing densities reaching 8,000,000 cells/litre in spring and autumn-winter periods. Algal filaments enter the lake from Lake Fiastrone through the Valcimarra hydroelectric power plant. The area experiences some erosional phenomena near the inhabited centre of Caccamo fraction.
