Italy Lake 1 - Excellent

San Lorenzo is a bathing water area on Lago del Fiastrone in the municipality of Fiastra, Macerata province, Marche region. The beach has a width of 20 metres and is located at an altitude of 640 metres. A bathing facility with catering and hygienic services is present at the site. The lake is used for various sports activities including fishing and canoeing, with regulated zones marked by signs.

Water

Lago del Fiastrone (Lake Fiastrone). The bathing area covers 1.52143 hectares at an altitude of 640 metres. The lake is oligotrophic and exists exclusively for electricity production.

Location

Fiastra, Macerata province, Marche region. The competent authority is the Municipality of Fiastra, Via Roma 1, telephone 0737 52112. Animal access is restricted and regulated by municipal ordinance for April to September.

Facilities

Bathing facility with catering and hygienic services. Pedal boat rental available. Motorised boats are not permitted in the lake.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: E (poorest classification). The lake has been subject to cyclic blooms of Planktothrix rubescens for years. The bathing water was prohibited during the entire bathing season of 2007 and in June 2008 due to cyanobacterial density exceeding 5,000 cells/ml according to the 31 July 1998 ministerial circular. Pollution sources include urban and domestic wastewater discharge from the municipal treatment plant at San Lorenzo, agricultural runoff, and livestock effluent.

Risks

Cyclic cyanobacterial blooms of Planktothrix rubescens. Water interdiction occurred during the entire 2007 bathing season and in June 2008 due to cyanobacterial density. No toxic effects clearly connected to cyanobacterial proliferation have been reported in bathers or the aquatic environment.
