Davanti Fosso Castellano is a pebble and sand beach in Porto Sant'Elpidio with a gentle slope of 3% extending both above and below water. The beach is protected by artificial riprap structures and a perpendicular emerged rock barrier immediately north of the Castellano monitoring station. The beach width averages 5 metres. The surrounding area includes urban settlement, tourist facilities, agricultural land, and a railway line.

Water

Coastal marine water body (Civitanova_Porto San Giorgio). The distance between mean low and high water (safe water limit) is approximately 80 metres. Astronomical tide range is 30–50 centimetres. The area covers 1.93455 hectares.

Location

Porto Sant'Elpidio, Fermo Province, Marche Region, Italy. The bathing station is located at the Castellano monitoring point, with the beach situated along the coast between the Chienti and Tenna rivers.

Facilities

Beach establishment with refreshment point and toilet services. Disabled access and animal access regulations apply (animals prohibited on public beach; permitted on concession beach at concessionaire's discretion).

Water Quality

Classification: Category C. Water quality results: 2015 Excellent (E. coli 238.0, Enterococci 93.6 at 95th percentile); 2016 Good (E. coli 262.8, Enterococchi 101.6); 2017 Good (E. coli 306.8, Enterococchi 106.6); 2018 Good (E. coli 248.0, Enterococchi 113.7). Pollution sources include: Castellano stream mouth, clear water discharge 575 metres north of station, Fonte di Mare stream mouth 855 metres north, urban runoff ditch 1,200 metres north, and urban sewer overflow outlet 520 metres south. The area is served by mixed municipal sewerage connected to a treatment plant (capacity 48,000 inhabitant equivalents; currently treating 33,000 in winter and 38,000 in summer).

Risks

Short-duration pollution events from accidental failures and sewer overflows. Potential discharge sources from clear water outlets and stream mouths. No cyanobacterial proliferation detected. No algal blooms or toxic species proliferation reported in the last 4 years.
