Davanti Fosso della Fornace is a beach in San Benedetto del Tronto with fine sand and a gentle slope of 3% extending across both emerged and submerged sections. The beach is protected by artificial rocky outcrops. The distance between mean low water and the safe water boundary is approximately 80 metres. Astronomical tidal range is 30–50 centimetres. The surrounding area is densely urbanised with a railway line passing through.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Category E. The area is served by a mixed public sewer system connected to a treatment plant located in Porto d'Ascoli (via Brodolini 8). The plant is a biological activated sludge facility with design capacity of 180,000 population equivalents and current capacity of 100,000 population equivalents. The mixed sewer also discharges industrial effluent equivalent to 40,000 population equivalents. The receiving water body is the Tronto River (Tronto River basin). In 2006 and 2007, the treatment plant demonstrated good efficiency with COD, BOD5, and suspended solids parameters consistently compliant. Microbiological controls in 2008, 2009, and 2010 were compliant.

Risks

Short-duration pollution events characterised by accidental failures and sewer overflows at lifting stations located at via Voltattorni and via Tibullo (railway underpass).
