Direttrice Via Donizetti is a fine sand beach in Porto San Giorgio with a medium slope of 3% on both emerged and submerged areas. The beach is protected by artificial rocky outcrops and has an average width of 150 metres. The distance between mean-low and high water (safe water limit) is approximately 80 metres, with astronomical tidal range of 30–50 centimetres. The surrounding area is densely urbanised with a railway line passing through.

Location

Facilities

Lifeguard towers present. Beach chalets with bar and restaurant services in concession. Disabled access infrastructure. First aid service approximately 1500 metres south. Dogs not permitted during peak summer tourism season.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: E (poor). Treatment is provided by a mixed public sewerage system connected to a wastewater treatment plant in C. da Salvanon, Fermo municipality. The plant is biological type with activated sludge, design capacity 40,000 inhabitant equivalents. Treated wastewater consists of domestic and industrial effluents discharged to Fosso Camera, tributary of Torrente Ete Vivo. In 2006 and 2007, the plant showed good efficiency with COD, BOD5, and suspended solids parameters always compliant. Microbiological controls in 2008 and 2010 were compliant; however, one of two controls in August 2009 was non-compliant for E. coli at 120,000 CFU/100 ml due to an inlet pipe malfunction.

Risks

Three pump-lift stations identified discharging to coastal waters: Via Petrarca, Via Rossini, and Via Solferino. Persistent foam reported along shoreline in October 2010. Mixed phytoplankton bloom of diatoms recorded at 2,344,320 cells/litre. No particular health risk situations reported.
