Davanti Fosso Petronilla is a fine sandy beach in Porto San Giorgio, Marche region, with a gentle average slope of 3% on both the exposed and submerged areas. The beach is protected by artificial rocky cliffs and has a mean width of 50 metres. The distance between medium-low and high water (safe water limit) is approximately 80 metres, with astronomical tides ranging from 30 to 50 centimetres. The surrounding area is densely urbanized with a railway line passing through.

Water

Coastal bathing water (Civitanova_Porto San Giorgio water body). Area: 1.58484 square kilometres. Tidal range: 30–50 centimetres. The water body is influenced by contributions from the Fiume Ete Vivo river.

Location

Porto San Giorgio, Marche province, Italy. Located near Fosso Petronilla. The municipal office and harbour authority are approximately 250 metres north. A first aid post is available 200 metres north with defibrillators at the beach facilities. An information point is located 150 metres north. Lifeguard towers present. Beach concessions with bars and catering facilities. Disabled access services available. First aid post approximately 200 metres north with defibrillators at beach facilities. Information point 150 metres north. Dogs allowed only at participating beach concessions.

Water Quality

2015: Excellent class (E. coli 95th percentile 70.2 CFU/100ml, intestinal enterococci 53.3 CFU/100ml). 2016: Good class (E. coli 164.8, intestinal enterococci 127.0). 2017: Good class (E. coli 263.9, intestinal enterococci 120.9). 2018: Good class (E. coli 342.1, intestinal enterococci 143.7). The area is served by a public mixed sewerage system connected to a treatment plant with capacity of 40,000 equivalent inhabitants. Treatment plant uses activated sludge biological treatment.

Risks

Multiple pumping stations capable of discharging untreated urban and stormwater runoff. Occasional flooding events from heavy rainfall causing short-duration pollution episodes. Fitoplankton and macroalgae proliferation events recorded: Noctiluca scintillans bloom in February 2009 in the northern area; mixed diatom microalgae bloom recorded in October 2010 (2,344,320 cells/litre) with persistent foam along the shoreline. A non-conforming E. coli reading (120,000 CFU/100ml) occurred in August 2009 due to damage to the treatment plant inlet pipe.
