San Bartolomé reservoir is a continental bathing area located in Ejea de Los Caballeros, Zaragoza province, in the Aragón autonomous community of Spain. The reservoir covers 100 hectares with a volume of 6 cubic hectometres and a maximum depth of 12 metres. It is situated in a topographically depressed zone in the Arba de Luesia river basin, surrounded primarily by agricultural land with significant irrigation areas. The bathing area operates seasonally, typically between July and August, and serves recreational purposes alongside irrigation, water supply, fishing, and navigation functions.

Water

Reservoir on the Arba de Luesia river. Surface area: 100 hectares. Total volume: 6 cubic hectometres. Maximum depth: 12 metres. Mean depth: 6 metres. Maximum elevation: 417 metres above sea level. Height of dam: 18 metres. Spillway capacity: 22 cubic metres per second. The reservoir bed comprises gravel, sand, and silt.

Location

Ejea de Los Caballeros, Zaragoza, Spain. Access via the A-1204 road in the direction of Rivas/Farasdués, approximately 9 kilometres from Ejea de Los Caballeros. A left turn leads to the San Bartolomé reservoir; continue 2 kilometres to the dam and follow the track around the reservoir towards the Bar 'El Pantano'. Parking is available.

Facilities

Parking. Bar/snack bar. Picnic areas. Waste containers. Toilets. Showers (a prepared changing room and bathing space exists but is not yet fully operational). Concrete boat dock. Informational signage regarding fishing and cleanliness. Disabled fishing area. Daily visitor numbers: weekends 80–100; weekdays 10–20. Waste collection from containers occurs weekly. Bar sanitation system: septic tank.

Season

Normally between July and August. The autonomous community establishes the exact bathing calendar each season.

Water Quality

In 2017, all monitoring results indicated excellent water quality. E. coli and intestinal enterococci concentrations complied with excellent classification standards. The bathing area cannot yet receive an official annual quality classification due to insufficient historical data records; however, current data from 2017 show excellent quality. The underlying groundwater body has poor chemical status due to significant nitrate contamination in the southeastern sector.

Risks

User self-contamination from swimmers is identified as a significant short-term pressure. No lifeguards are present.
