Water

Artificial reservoir (embalse) on the Ompolveda River in the Tajo River basin. Surface area: 3,212.88 hectares. Total volume: 802.56 cubic hectometres. Maximum normal water level: 718.00 metres. Average water reserves during bathing season (June-September) 2002-2012: 282.15 cubic hectometres. Bed composition includes clays, silts, gravels, stones and boulders with algal veils and aquatic plants. Right bank substrate of sand and stones; left bank substrate of limestone and marl.

Location

Pareja, Guadalajara, Castilla - La Mancha, Spain. Access via National Road N-204 direction Pareja, following signs for Dique de Pareja (km 9.8). Parking available at two locations near the bathing zone.

Facilities

Parking, informational signage, trash bins, dumpsters, boat dock, wooden bridge, perimeter path with benches. Not available: lifeguard posts, toilets, showers, bar/restaurant, snack areas, recreational zones, fountains, swimming pools. Pet access status unknown.

Water Quality

Water quality monitoring conducted according to Royal Decree 1341/2007. Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci measurements recorded during 2013 bathing season. Identified contamination sources include self-contamination by bathers, sewage from Casasana hamlet (assessed as non-significant risk), livestock farming runoff (sheep, goats, cattle, equine, pork units present in upstream municipalities), agricultural runoff from dryland and irrigated crops, accidental or illegal discharges, dead animals, organic waste, and sediment remobilization. Water quality influenced by abnormally reduced reservoir volumes during certain periods.

Risks

Algal veils and aquatic plants present in reservoir. Short-duration contamination risks from wastewater system failures, accidental or illegal discharges near bathing zone (especially when reservoir levels are abnormally low), livestock manure mobilization during heavy rain or wind, sediment remobilization from high bather numbers, organic waste from high bather numbers. Risks are primarily unpredictable with durations typically under 24-72 hours.
