Water

Reservoir (embalse) on the Gállego River. Surface area: 114 hectares. Volume: 25 cubic hectometres. Maximum water level altitude: 1,283 metres. Bed composed of rocky substrate with medium-sized stones. High mountain river type. Water level and beach dimensions vary seasonally according to reservoir management.

Location

Sallent de Gállego, Huesca province, Aragón, Spain. Access from Sallent de Gállego via track or road towards Lanuza, approximately 1 km to the bathing zone on the right margin. Parking available.

Facilities

Parking, rescue service, bar/restaurant, toilets, showers, waste bins, jetty/embarcadero, information signs. All services except parking, rescue, toilets, showers, and jetty are provided by Bar-Restaurant Suscalar. No metered garbage collection; no recreation zone; no domestic animal access specified.

Season

Official monitoring season 2011: 3 July to 27 August. Swimming season normally occurs between July and August, varying year to year.

Water Quality

Water quality classification 2010–2011: Excellent to Good based on Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci measurements. Monitored according to Real Decreto 1341/2007. Pollution source identified: wastewater discharge from Bar-Restaurant Suscalar (3 inhabitants equivalent, 19 m³/day) via septic tank located downstream of bathing zone, presenting significant risk of short-duration contamination.

Risks

Wastewater discharge from Bar-Restaurant Suscalar via septic tank located downstream. Bathing area can become unavailable or significantly reduced during periods of low reservoir water levels, as occurred in summer 2011.
