The Cinca River at Puértolas is a high-altitude mountain river bathing area located in the Pyrenees of Aragón, Spain. The section designated for swimming is known as Las Gorgas de Puértolas-Gorga V and features a single, slightly sinuous channel with granite bedrock substrate covered in gravel and small pools. The area is well-preserved and surrounded by pine forests with poplars and holm oaks along the riverbanks. Water quality monitoring during 2010–2011 showed excellent to good ratings for microbial contamination indicators.

Water

Mountain river section of the Cinca River, a tributary of the Ebro. The bathing reach extends from the Irués River to the Vellos River upstream of the Laspuña power station. Width approximately 14 metres. Depth reaches 1.4 metres in the surveyed cross-section. Environmental flow rate 1.241 m³/s; four-year return period discharge 27.50 m³/s. Summer flows range from approximately 5–10 m³/s. Substrate is predominantly granite with gravel and small rocky pools.

Location

Puértolas, Huesca province, Aragón, Spain. Access from Hospital de Tella via regional road A-138 towards Escalona; parking is located at approximately kilometre 61.8 of this road. The bathing area entrance is accessed by a path from the parking area.

Facilities

Parking available. Informational signage present. No lifeguards, no toilet facilities, no showers, no bars or refreshment stands, no picnic areas, no waste bins, no boat ramp, no recreational zones, no drinking fountains. Domestic animals access not specified.

Season

Officially 3 July to 27 August in 2011. Typically between July and August, varying year to year depending on river conditions.

Water Quality

Water quality classification for 2010–2011: excellent to good according to Royal Decree 1341/2007. E. coli and intestinal enterococcus concentrations remained well below threshold values throughout the monitoring period (2010–2011). The associated surface water body (Cinca River from Irués to Vellos) has good ecological status. Minor point sources include small wastewater discharges from nearby settlements (Hospital, Tella, Sin) via the Yaga tributary, but these posed no significant risk due to distance and dilution.
