Location

Chantada municipality, Lugo province, Galicia, Spain. Access via the N-540 Orense-Pontevedra road, continuing until reaching a bike path before the river. No parking available.

Toilets available. Picnic areas present. Informational signage. Waste bins and collection services. Children's play zone. Football field. No lifeguards. No showers. No parking. No bar or snack facilities. No domestic animal access area.

Water Quality

Water quality was monitored from 2011 to 2015. Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci concentrations were measured against standards established by Royal Decree 1341/2007. Identified contamination sources include extensive livestock (12,679 cattle, 3,052 pigs, 123 sheep, 42 horses), agricultural runoff, accidental or illegal discharges, and bather autocontamination during high-usage periods.

Risks

Short-duration contamination risks identified including livestock runoff from manure storage system failures, agricultural runoff during heavy rainfall, bather autocontamination during high-usage weekends, sediment remobilization during rainfall or high bather numbers, accidental or illegal discharges, dead animal appearance, and reduced river flow conditions that can amplify livestock and sewage-related contamination.
