Río Miño at Saviñao is a river bathing area located in Galicia, Spain, in the municipality of Saviñao in the province of Lugo. The bathing zone is also known as Praia da Cova and is situated in the locality of Fión. The riverbed consists of large stones, and the beach area is sandy. The surface water body is classified as being in good or better condition according to the Miño-Sil river basin authority.

Water

River (Miño). The river has mean monthly flows ranging from 5.013 m³/s in July-September to 26.871 m³/s in January-March. A three-year return period flood flow is 1061.6 m³/s. The river bed is composed of large stones. The bathing zone has a sandy beach area that transitions to deep, unmarked rocky cliffs.

Location

Saviñao, Lugo province, Galicia, Spain. Access is from Escairón via the Pantón road (LU-P-4102) to Fión, then turning right onto a winding road (LU-P-5801) that leads to the beach. Parking is available.

Water Quality

Water quality monitoring was conducted from 2011 to 2015 for intestinal enterococci and Escherichia coli concentrations. Results are compared against the threshold for sufficient quality bathing water established in Royal Decree 1341/2007. Sources of contamination include point sources from wastewater treatment at Belesar (150 equivalent inhabitants) and an industrial park at Pesqueiras (2500 equivalent inhabitants), plus diffuse sources from cattle and agricultural runoff.

Risks

A deep, unmarked rocky cliff hazard exists where the flat sandy zone ends. Bathing and boat zones are not separated. Short-duration contamination risks include significant point source discharges from wastewater treatment system failures, runoff from livestock operations, runoff from rainfall, high bather numbers on weekends, accidental or illegal discharges, dead animals, sediment remobilization, and organic waste from bathers. Reduced river flow exacerbates these risks.
