Esbjerg Strand is a water activity area located in a crescent-shaped bathing zone approximately 900 metres long and 20–80 metres wide. The area is not a sandy beach but a designated swimming and water sports facility with access via southern stairs. The bathing area is marked by a blue line on official maps, with a red-marked area where swimming is discouraged. When the red flag is raised, swimming is discouraged throughout the entire bathing area.

Water

Saltwater bay (Ho Bugt). The bathing area is 900 metres long and 20–80 metres wide. Water depth varies from several metres at the edges to shallow areas towards the lagoon's eastern end where bottom contact is possible. High water exchange occurs due to tidal changes approximately every 6 hours. Water depth and current direction vary significantly throughout the day due to tidal shifts and weather conditions. The water contains fine suspended sediment from natural mudflat silt and is therefore turbid.

Location

Esbjerg, Denmark. The bathing area is located in a pocket between the beach 'Mennesket ved Havet' to the north and Esbjerg Brygge and harbour to the south. Parking is available on the island at Esbjerg Strand.

Facilities

Lifeguard rings and rescue ladders are positioned along the perimeter. Project Aqtiv includes bathing piers, green recreational areas, toilet facilities, and a base for swimming guests and water activity participants. Toilet facilities are available in the Maritime Centre building associated with Project Aqtiv (expected completion by start of 2023 bathing season) and temporary toilets are set up as needed. Waste bins are provided throughout the area.

Season

1 June to 1 September. Routine water quality control samples are taken during this period.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent. Classification is based on routine control samples analysed for indicator bacteria E. coli and enterokokker. The 2022 classification was based on 32 measurements. Classifications in 2020 and 2021 were unknown due to zero measurements. Identified potential pollution sources include treated wastewater discharge from Rensningsanlæg Vest to the south, overflow structures from four overflow buildings, Fovrfeld Bæk stream with rainwater and overflow discharges, surface water from rainfall on the island, and the recreational boat harbour. Under normal circumstances, treated wastewater has low influence on bathing water quality due to tidal currents. Preliminary findings indicate low probability of bacteria from mechanical treatment reaching the bathing area, with minimal impact.

Risks

Risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms is low. Risk of phytoplankton blooms is low. Algal blooms can occur suddenly, particularly during extended warm periods with nutrient-rich water. Algae may produce toxic substances causing headache, skin irritation, fever, nausea and diarrhoea upon contact. Sudden pollution can occur from recreational boat incidents and sewer line failures. Water is naturally turbid due to suspended sediment from mudflat silt, and the rule of being able to see one's toes does not generally apply in this mudflat environment.
