Mennesket ved Havet is a 1,200-meter-long beach located along the southern part of Fovrfeld, facing Ho Bay in Esbjerg, Denmark. The beach features coarse sand with scattered small stones and is 40 meters wide. A distinctive 9-meter-high white concrete sculpture called 'Mennesket ved Havet' (The Man by the Sea) marks the southern end of the beach. The water in Ho Bay is classified as saltwater and is shallow in this area, with water depth less than 2 meters extending 200 meters from the shore. The water contains fine suspended material from the natural Wadden Sea and is typically unclear.

Saltwater bay (Ho Bay). Maximum water depth less than 2 meters extending 200 meters from shore. Water depth and current direction are affected by tidal changes occurring approximately every 6 hours. The water contains fine suspended sediment from natural Wadden Sea silt.

Location

The beach is located in Esbjerg, Denmark, along Fovrfeld facing Ho Bay. Access is via Sædding Strandvej, with parking available along the road throughout the beach's length. Toilets are available at the parking area near Mennesket ved Havet sculpture.

Water Quality

Current classification: Good. Based on routine sampling during the bathing season (1 June to 1 September) over the preceding 4 years. Water quality is monitored for indicator bacteria E. coli and enterococci. Previous classifications: 2019 Good, 2020 Good, 2021 Excellent, 2022 Good. The classification is revised annually before the bathing season begins.

Risks

Stormwater discharge outlet north of the beach at Karl Andersens Vej contains high concentrations of fecal bacteria during rainfall; swimming is discouraged at and around this outlet. Fovrfeld Creek outflow south of the beach receives stormwater discharges and discharges from four overflow structures including one from West Treatment Plant; overflows can contaminate bathing water. Low risk of cyanobacterial blooms. Low risk of phytoplankton blooms. Low risk of macroalgal accumulation. Possible occurrence of glass shards, litter, chemical pollution, and oil spills.
