The bathing area at Strandvejen near Faxe Ladeplads comprises three beaches: Faxe Ladeplads, Cafe Hjortholm, and Faxehus, stretching across 1000 metres. The beach is approximately 10 metres wide with sand. Water access is limited to certain sections along the stretch. Seaweed problems can occur during onshore winds. The area is divided by the outlet of Faxe Å river.

Water

Open coastal water (type OW3a) with variable lower salinity, shallow depth, and wind and wave protection. Water depth is under 2 metres up to 400 metres from shore. The deepest point in Faxe Bay is 14 metres at approximately 2.5 kilometres from shore. Summer water temperature ranges from 12 to 19 degrees Celsius. Local currents and ocean currents are highly dependent on wind conditions and tides.

Location

Located at Strandvejen near Faxe Ladeplads in Faxe Municipality. Two parking areas are available: approximately 400 metres south of the pleasure boat harbour and approximately 950 metres south of the pleasure boat harbour. The best water access is at the parking area south of Faxe Å, bordered by a folk high school to the south and Faxe Å to the north.

Season

Bathing water is monitored during the bathing season. Bathing is not recommended within 100 metres of the Faxe Å river outlet for up to three days after major rainfall events.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as excellent to good based on four years of analysis data. In 2016, individual beaches were classified as excellent (Faxehus and Café Hjortholm) and good (Faxe Ladeplads). The bathing water was previously classified as poor due to temporary contamination issues. Two cases of relatively high faecal bacteria content were detected in 2015. Contamination sources are primarily overflow events from combined sewer systems and treatment plant discharges during heavy rainfall.

Risks

Risk of temporary faecal contamination from combined sewer overflows and treatment plant discharges during heavy rainfall. Algal blooms occur, particularly in warm, sunny, and calm periods. Blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) from the central Baltic Sea can spread into the area during easterly winds. Seaweed can wash ashore during storms and onshore winds, causing aesthetic problems and potential oxygen depletion.
