Feringasee Unterfoehring

Germany Lake 1 - Excellent

Feringasee is a recreational lake in Unterföhring created between 1974 and 1976 from gravel extraction for motorway construction. The lake covers 320,000 m² of water surface with a maximum depth of approximately 7 metres and is fed by groundwater sources with a natural outflow. It is a popular gathering place for people of all ages, featuring a naturist peninsula, a designated surfing area, and an ecological wetland habitat along the northern shore.

Water

Recreational lake with a water surface area of 320,000 m². The lake has a maximum depth of approximately 7 metres, a shoreline length of 3,000 metres, and is fed by groundwater sources with a natural outflow. Total recreation area is 624,000 m² including 304,000 m² of land (of which 212,000 m² is meadow for sunbathing) and 320,000 m² of water surface.

Location

Located at Erlbachstraße 1 in 85774 Unterföhring. Vehicle access is exclusively via Erlbachstraße. Four parking areas are available: P1 with 280 spaces (at the naturist area), P2 with 1,165 spaces including 20 disabled spaces and 50 motorcycle spaces, P3 with 500 spaces and 20 motorcycle spaces, and P4 with approximately 400 spaces as reserve. Parking fees of 3.00 euros per car and 1.50 euros per motorcycle are charged from 1 May to 30 September. A car park in nearby Jahnstraße provides underground parking within walking distance.

Facilities

Restaurant with beer garden and externally accessible toilets for swimmers, kiosk with toilets at the naturist island, kiosk at the surf club clubhouse, water rescue station staffed on weekends during the bathing season, multiple emergency call columns on sunbathing areas, disabled bathing area with ramp in the southeastern corner (currently closed) with nearby toilet facilities, additional disabled toilets near the surfer area and on the naturist island, grilling zone for small family grills only, beach volleyball court with two playing fields, multiple sandy areas at the water.

Season

Monitored bathing season from Easter to end of October. Water rescue station is staffed on weekends during this period.

Water Quality

Water quality classification based on monitoring results from 2021 to 2024. Recent monitoring from May to September 2025 shows all samples rated as bacteriologically unobjectionable. E. coli levels ranged from <10 to 53 KBE/100 ml, and enterococci levels ranged from <10 to 43 KBE/100 ml. A bathing ban is issued if E. coli exceeds 1,800 KBE/100 ml or intestinal enterococci exceed 700 KBE/100 ml in a confirmed follow-up sample.

Risks

Parasites (cercariae) may cause itchy skin rash (bathing dermatitis), which is usually harmless but bothersome. Cyanobacteria may proliferate under certain conditions, and toxins produced by some cyanobacteria can pose a health risk to humans and animals at elevated concentrations.
