Water

Coastal and transitional waters of Etang de Berre lagoon. Robinsons beach: 679 metres long, average width 5 metres, oriented E-SE. Sandy and pebble beach with dike structure 30 metres long at southern end.

Location

Etang de Berre lagoon region. Multiple beaches documented including Robinsons (Rognac municipality). Surrounding tributaries: Arc, Touloubre, and Cadière rivers serve as watershed outlets.

Season

Monitoring undertaken May to September, with focus during summer months. Minimum 4 samples per season required for classification.

Water Quality

2024 classification: Excellent for Robinsons beach. Water quality assessed on 4-year minimum dataset (current season plus 3 previous seasons). Regulatory parameters for coastal and transitional waters: Excellent quality (Intestinal Enterococci 100 CFU/100ml, E. Coli 250 CFU/100ml at 95th percentile). Storm episodes show mean contamination 24 hours after rainfall of 115 CFU E. Coli/100ml and 79 CFU Enterococci/100ml across all beaches. Three beaches identified as more sensitive to storm pollution: Champigny, Marettes, and Romaniquette.

Risks

Storm episodes (rainfall ≥10mm/24h) cause short-term bacterial contamination. Treatment plants on watershed can malfunction during severe rainfall, causing contamination particularly via Arc river near Champigny beach. Three beaches (Champigny, Marettes, Romaniquette) show heightened sensitivity to storm-related pollution. Confined bay conditions at Robinsons beach may induce pollutant buildup.
