Bathing water profile document for Étang de Berre beaches in France, updated for 2025. Covers risk profiles and management plans for multiple bathing sites on the lagoon. Includes evaluation of bacterial contamination following storm episodes and physical characteristics of individual beaches. Monitoring is based on intestinal enterococci and Escherichia coli parameters according to EU Bathing Water Directive 2006/76/CE.

Water

Coastal and transitional water body (lagoon). Étang de Berre with tributaries including Arc, Touloubre, and Cadière rivers. Robinsons beach: 679 metres length, average width 5 metres, east-southeast orientation, sandy and pebbly shore.

Location

Étang de Berre lagoon, southern France. Multiple beaches including Robinsons (Rognac), Champigny, Marettes, Romaniquette, and others around the lagoon.

Season

Monitoring season May to September. Evaluation conducted at end of each bathing season based on data from that season and three previous seasons.

Water Quality

Water quality classification system: excellent, good, sufficient, or insufficient. Regulatory values for coastal and transitional waters: Excellent quality (intestinal enterococci 100 UFC/100ml, E. coli 250 UFC/100ml at 95th percentile); Good quality (intestinal enterococci 200 UFC/100ml, E. coli 500 UFC/100ml at 95th percentile); Sufficient quality (intestinal enterococci 185 UFC/100ml, E. coli 500 UFC/100ml at 90th percentile). Robinsons beach classified excellent in 2024, with good rating in 2021 and excellent in 2022–2023. Monitoring based on minimum 4 samples per season, evaluation on 16 samples minimum from current and 3 previous seasons.

Risks

Storm episodes identified as contamination risk. Nine storm events (4.6–45 mm over 24 hours) monitored since 2012. Three beaches particularly sensitive to storm-related contamination: Champigny, Marettes, and Romaniquette. Average bacterial contamination 24 hours post-storm: 115 UFC E. coli/100ml and 79 UFC enterococci/100ml. Wastewater treatment plant malfunctions and heavy rainfall can cause bacteriological contamination via Arc river near Champigny beach. Beach closure recommended for 24 hours following storms or significant rainfall (≥10 mm/24h).
