Fussing Sø

Denmark Lake 1 - Excellent

Fussing Sø is a lake located 8 km west of Randers in Denmark. The bathing area is situated at the western end of the lake and features a bathing bridge with a small sandy beach approximately 0.5 meters wide. The surrounding area includes a large grassy zone with picnic facilities and access to an extensive network of walking trails. The lake is approximately 3 km long and 29 meters deep, set within a scenic landscape with steep slopes. Water temperature ranges from approximately 10°C to 22°C during the bathing season.

Water

Freshwater lake approximately 3 km long and 29 meters deep. The lake bed consists of gravel and stones in shallow areas near the shore, transitioning to soft bottom with fine sand at greater depths. Water depth at the bathing bridge is approximately 0–1.5 meters, with 2-meter depth located approximately 140 meters from shore. Scattered aquatic plant vegetation occurs in shallow water areas.

Location

Fussing Sø is located 8 km west of Randers, Denmark. The bathing beach is at the western end of the lake. The address is Grovebakkevej, 8900 Randers. A parking area accessible via Grovebakkevej provides parking for 75-100 cars.

Water Quality

Water quality has historically been characterized as 'very good'. Quality is analysed annually by the municipality and classified according to bathing water regulations as: Excellent quality, good quality, satisfactory quality, or poor quality, based on four-year measurements of E. coli and enterococci. Low risk of faecal pollution. Risk of toxic cyanobacterial blooms is low, though swimmers experienced poisoning symptoms (skin allergies) in late summer 2009 and a bathing prohibition was temporarily imposed. Toxic cyanobacteria were detected in 2010 at very low concentrations with no health hazard. Risk of algal blooms is highest in August–September and spring/early summer.

Cyanobacterial blooms producing toxins that cause headaches, skin irritation, fever, nausea, and diarrhea; risk highest in August–September. Other microscopic algae can cause water cloudiness in summer; risk of algal blooms highest in spring and early summer. Substantial aquatic vegetation and filamentous algae present. Faecal pollution from grazing horses in adjacent pasture (north-east of public area), though distance to bathing area is large. Pollen accumulations along shoreline in spring/early summer. Potential for plant material decomposition causing bacterial growth.
