Germany Lake 1 - Excellent

Gamensee is a lake located approximately 20 kilometres north-east of Berlin near Tiefensee. It is the largest and most southerly lake in a series embedded in the Gamengrund, an ice-age channel formed during the last glaciation. The lake is approximately 2 kilometres long, 130 metres wide, and reaches a maximum depth of 8 metres. It has steep shores with minimal reed beds but substantial underwater vegetation, and is known to support pike, eels, bass, carp, and tench. The lake offers good water quality and serves as a popular recreation destination for visitors from eastern Berlin.

Water

Lake without inflow and outflow. Area: 24 hectares. Volume: 8 million cubic metres. Length: approximately 2 kilometres. Width: approximately 130 metres. Maximum depth: 8 metres. North-south orientation with stable temperature stratification in summer. Water transparency in summer: 1.5 to 2.0 metres (mean 1.8 metres). Summer water temperature range: 10.2 to 25.4 degrees Celsius.

Location

Approximately 20 kilometres north-east of Berlin, near the locality of Tiefensee. The bathing area is located at the Country-Camping campsite at the northern end of the lake. A circular walking path around the lake forms part of a nature park route.

Season

Testing conducted year-round, monitored every four weeks according to Brandenburg Bathing Water Regulations.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent (based on microbiological assessment). No exceedances of single values for E. coli and intestinal enterococci. No blue-green algae blooms observed in the last 4 years. No risk of infection from cercarial dermatitis. Monitored every four weeks by the health authority.
